Wise Beyond His Years...

This letter, from one of our owners, appeared in the Winter 1999 issue of the Natural Gait News.

I felt compelled to thank some of the people involved in this wonderful breed!

I just bought my first (suggesting others to come in future years) Rocky Mountain Horse from Glen Wood of Havenwood Farms. His name is Havenwood’s China Boy and I’ll never look at ANY horse the same way again. I’ve owned several breeds, excellent specimens too, believe me, and I’ve loved them all for different reasons - but they were not what I needed, and finally, not what I wanted, in an equine partner.

My Rocky has surpassed all the expectations I had of him. I did my research, I read and looked and talked to quite a few Rocky folks, and so entered into this purchase knowing something of what to expect. “Teddy Bear”, however, has given me pause for thought - a good kind of pause! How to put into words to describe this wonderful Rocky is difficult. He’s gentle, docile, and sensible - way beyond his years. He curious, affectionate and not a typical equine! He’s more like an older Labrador dog!

I rode him for the first time today at his new home with me. (I just got him ten days ago). He impressed me even more with his “OK, I guess you know what you’re doing” attitude. No flack, no argument, no resentment or hint of unwillingness. No threat of buck or shy or rear or evasion of any kind. Mutual trust with this horse is going to happen in record time! In fact, I cannot recall riding any horse in my years of riding, who so transmitted such a “can do” and “if you want to” attitude! He’s green, sure (only 2 1/2 years with about 15 rides on him), but there was no hint of danger in riding him alone out in a ten acre field, away from “home”. We did circles, figure eights and serpentines. Like Glen said too, he really LOVES to walk! He slipped into gait several times and what a feeling!! I actualy looked up from his neck and the ground (my usual focus from astride) to enjoy the beautiful scenery around me. What a good boy! This really is a travelling kinda horse. And I’m finally going to really enjoy using the many dollars in grooming stuff I’ve bought for horses before who never really appreciated the attention. I’ll never part with my perfect equine partner and look forward to the next 30 or more years we’ll have together.

I love my “Teddy Bear” and want to thank you all for maintaining what has got to be the most puppy dog of breeds out there! Thank you, thank you, thank you! (Lord knows, Glen gets enough phone calls from me!)

Take care and apples all around ....

Sincerely,

Erika Karrei
