January 2005 Volume 1

Havenwood's Sparkle and Cappucino during warmer days.

Happy New Year and welcome to our first issue of
The Havenwood Times” !

We’ve been kicking around the idea of starting a farm newsletter for a couple of years now and over Christmas we finally got down to it. We'd like to use this newsletter to keep folks up to date on what’s happening here at the farm... upcoming clinics, new foals, horses for sale, as well as sharing training tips and information on new products that we’ve tried... in fact, any items of interest relating to the wonderful Rocky Mountain breed.

For those of you who don’t know us, Havenwood Farms is the largest breeder of Rocky Mountain Horses in Ontario (Canada). We have been breeding Rockies for over 12 years now and currently keep a herd of more than 50 horses, including 3 double registered stallions. For more information on our farm, please click here. If you are not familiar with the Rocky Mountain horse, you can learn more from our web-site at www.havenwoodfarms.com.

We hope that you enjoy this newsletter and find it helpful (or at least interesting). If you've received it, it means that at some time in past couple of years we’ve exchanged emails. If you feel that this has been sent to you in error and do not wish to receive any future copies, please click below to send a note to:
unsubscribe@havenwoodfarms.com
and we’ll take you off of our mailing list.

Happy Trails,
Havenwood Farms

Tsunami Relief: Be Careful of Cons
In the wake of the tsunami damage in the Indian Ocean we all want to do what we can to contribute to the relief efforts. Unfortunately some of the low-life scum on the web haven’t taken long to find ways to exploit that compassion.
Con-artists have set up sites that pretend to be collecting for charities and coerce people into giving up credit card information, access to their bank accounts or simply cash. They then send out emails inviting you to "click here to go to our site to contribute”.
To be safe, never follow a hyperlink from an email soliciting contributions. A couple of minutes with a search engine like Google and you can find half a dozen legitimate organizations such as the Red Cross (www.redcross.org) or the Rotary Club (www.rotary.org) and be sure that your money is going to help the suffering and not into the pockets of these despicable culprits.

Timmy's a Poster Boy!

A few weeks ago photographer Shawn Hamilton sent us a note to let us know that one of her shots of our stallion Tim would be featured in Blaze Kids magazine. That was pretty cool. But, even better, they also chose this picture to use as the banner for their booth at this years Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, so we can say that Timmy really is a "poster boy" for the Rockies! Clinicians Colleen and Tom Wood with their buddy Cappy.
Gaited Clinics at Can-Am Show

Havenwood Farms will be back at the Can-Am Equine Show in St. Thomas again this March.  This year we were invited to present a clinic on a “gaited horse topic”.  With only a one hour time-slot (twice each day of the show), it was a challenge to come up with a subject that would be of interest to both the gaited horse enthusiast and the uninitiated as well.  Since the first step in correcting gait is the ability to recognize it, we settled on “Identifying Gait” as our topic, which will also allow us to explain the difference between gaited and non-gaited horses to those unfamiliar with the gaited breeds.

Tom and Colleen Wood will host the sessions. Using video tape, slow motion digital photography and simple animations, they will explain and illustrate the four-beat gait, how it relates to other intermediate gaits, how to identify variations in gait and discuss some of the factors that can influence your horses ability to gait well. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Since the demise of Quarterama, the Can-Am Equine Show has become the premier spring event and trade show for the horse industry in Ontario.  Held annually at the Western Fair Grounds near London, Ontario, this year the show will run from March 17th through the 20th and will be housed entirely in the new, state of the art Agri-Plex.  In addition to presenting the clinics, Havenwood Farms will also be exhibiting with the "Gaited Horse Group of Ontario".  Click here, to find out more about the clinic schedule, location and for links to the show's web-site.

All the news that's fit to print?
Our farm was recently featured in a cover story in "The Weekend Post". The two page spread featured a brief history of the Rocky Mountain breed and an interview with Colleen. We received many calls from people who had never heard of Rockies before reading the article but were intrigued by the reporter's description of their "delightful disposition" and "rocking-chair ride".

Jim Bob & Cross Bo Getting All Growed Up!

The two colts that we purchased last year to replace Northern Drifter in our breeding program are now coming of age! They’ll both be two in the spring and are shaping up every bit as well as we hoped. Sons of Hammertime (Carl Vivian’s heir to Buddy Roe) and Bounty Hunter (whose pedigree reads like a “who’s who” of Rocky bloodlines), this pair are destined to add whole new dimension to a breeding program founded around our legendary son of Clemon’s Tim, Tim's Choco. Click here to see their photos and learn more about the “dynamic duo”!
