From the time our weanlings are first taught to lead, we require proper ground manners, attention and respect. Recent years have seen the advent of dozens of "fad" training methods, however we have found that nothing replaces the basic principle of a kind hand and word, coupled with an unbending requirement for respect and obedience.

With over 35 years of combined experience, Colleen and Tom Wood are two of Canada's leading gaited horse trainers. At Havenwood, we concentrate on preparing the horse for the trail and do not consider it a finished mount until it can be safely ridden through field and forest, on roads, past vehicles, alone or in groups. After starting our horses with ground driving and round-pen work, the balance of their training takes place "in the real world", on the trails, not in an arena.

Most of the horses we sell as weanlings are returned to us to be put under saddle. We offer discounted training rates for horses purchased here but do provide training for others as well. We can work with both horse and rider to help establish gait, with one-on-one training.
